Minecraft server doesn't start

Step-by-step diagnosis and fixes for startup errors: Java exceptions, memory problems, incompatible mods and wrong parameters.

Reading time: 8 minutesUpdated: 25 January 2026

Typical symptoms

  • The server stops immediately after you click "Start".
  • Java or OutOfMemory errors appear in the console.
  • The log ends with "Could not load…" or "Missing dependencies".

Main causes

Not enough memory

Xms/Xmx set too low causes a crash while loading chunks or mods.

Incompatible mods

Mods of different versions conflict with each other or with the server core.

Wrong Java

1.20+ needs Java 17, while older versions need Java 8.

Broken configs

Errors in server.properties or wrong startup arguments.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Check the startup log in the control panel and find the first line with an error.
  2. Make sure the Java version matches the server and modpack version.
  3. Allocate more memory: set Xms and Xmx to at least 4G for modded packs.
  4. Disable the most recently installed mod or plugin, then restart the server.
  5. Reset server.properties to the defaults and apply your changes again.
Example of a correct startup command
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar paper.jar nogui

Prevention

Make backups before updates, install mods one at a time and keep a separate list of versions. If the problem keeps coming back, send the logs to 5GHz Hosting support and we will find the conflict quickly.
