Valheim: connecting, password, admins and crossplay

How to join the server, make yourself an admin, enable commands and why the ping is high.

Connecting

In Valheim: Start Game → choose a character → Join Game → Add server → the address from the panel (IP:port) → the server password.

The password is set in "Startup" (or "Mods and settings"). It must be at least 5 characters long and must not match the server name, otherwise the server won't start.

Admins

  1. Find your SteamID64 (17 digits, starting with 7656…), for example through steamid.io using your profile link.
  2. "Files" → .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/adminlist.txt → one ID per line.
  3. If crossplay is on, IDs are written with a prefix: Steam_76561198000000000. Add both lines, with and without the prefix, and it works in either mode.

The server re-reads the list by itself, no restart needed: just rejoin the game.

Admin commands

  1. In the game press F5 to open the console (not the chat!).
  2. Enter devcommands once: the reply is "Dev commands: True". It's a toggle, so entering it again turns it off.
  3. Now god, ghost, fly, spawn Name amount, tod 0.5 (time of day) and others work.

Crossplay and ping

Enable Crossplay = 1 is only needed if someone plays on Xbox, Game Pass or the Microsoft Store. With crossplay all players connect through Microsoft servers (PlayFab): the ping is 150–300 ms and players join with an invite code.

If everyone plays through Steam, set Enable Crossplay = 0 in "Startup" and restart: the ping drops back to normal and you connect by IP.

"Incompatible version"

The player and the server are on different versions. Update the game in Steam and restart the server (it updates on start). With mods, everyone must have the same mods in the same versions.
